"Music is a higher
revelation than all
wisdom and philosphy.
 Music is the
electrical soil in
which the spirit lives,
thinks and invents."

Hello, my name is Paul Cowan. I am a senior at Kent state majoring in Music Education. I am currently student teaching with North Canton City Schools. Although my graduation date is approaching my educational adventure has not ended. Soon after graduation I plan on going back to school to obtain a masters in Education Administration.

In my Electronic Portfolio you can plan to fine; information about myself, student work samples, video teaching examples, resume, my philosophy of education, and how I plan to incorporate technology into my classroom.

The number one reason I want to become an educator, is so I can change people's life with music, as it has changed mine. Music is what I love to do; it is what defines who I am, and is what I am best known for. I want a job I enjoy waking up and going to everyday. I truly believe the classroom is where I should be!

Background information:

I grew up in Massillon, Ohio. Massillon is a fairly large close-knit community where tradition is extremely important. Living there gives everyone a sense of pride, that I have not experienced any where else. Attending Massillon Washington High opened many musical doors for me. The music program at WHS is top notch.I was very active in all the programs offered including AA contest choirs, and the award winning bands. Sports were also huge in Massillon, with football being in the spotlight. The only place to be on a Friday night during football season is Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. After winning 22 state championships, Massillon is naturally very competitive when it comes to football. The winning football team set the standards for the rest of the sports teams at WHS. Although I was not on the football team I was active in other sports; playing tennis, and swimming with the Tiger Sharks.

My music background started with fifth grade band continued through high school and beyond. I started studying voice with Paula Morgan in 2004, and studied with her for three years. After those three years with Mrs. Morgan, I continued my studies with Loren Veigel before going off to college. While in high school I had the pleasure of singing with many groups outside of school, with one being the OMEA All State Choir. After the amazing experience I had singing with the All State Choir, I knew I wanted to be a Music Educator.

During my undergraduate studies at Kent State University I studied Applied Voice and Studio Musicianship with Laurel Seeds, and Jay White. While at Kent I was also very active in the music world. During my duration at Kent I was an active member of the Ohio Collegiate Music Education Association (OCMEA). Not only was I a member, but my junior year I was Vice President, and President of OCMEA my senior year. I also sang with the Concert Choir directed by Fred Locker, and The Men’s Chorus directed by Doug Beery.
